Old newspapers spark memories for residents at Simonsfield

Residents of Simonsfield Residential Care Home have been looking at old copies of their local newspaper, the Liverpool Echo, from the 1920s to the Millennium.

The newspaper reproduced some of its old editions as part of a special series. Our activities co-ordinator, Dawn, realised the newspapers would be a fantastic resource for our residents and brought them in for everyone to share.

Dawn explained: “We’ve been getting together, looking at everything from old adverts for long-established stores such as T J Hughes, to coverage of football matches from decades ago.

“I’ve even been reading out old news reports. The residents have enjoyed this so much that I get a round of applause at the end of each session!”

Dawn continued: “We’ve looked at newspapers from the 1920s and 30s and we’ll be examining the 1940s next. It’s a real trip down memory lane. We’ve even found reports about our own building, from when it was a church, St Simon’s and St Jude’s. It’s absolutely fascinating.”
