Polly the dog is residents’ best friend at Birchley Hall

A friendly black Scottie dog called Polly has been making regular visits to Birchley Hall in Billinge, St Helens. She has been calling in twice a month with her owner to be petted and fed treats by our residents.

Polly is registered and specially trained in dog therapy, meaning she knows how to be gentle and friendly with people she hasn’t met before.

Polly’s biggest fans include our residents Jean, Marian and Margaret. Jean likes to say to her: “Come to auntie Jean!” and Margaret loves to walk her around the home.

We had the idea to introduce dog therapy after we noticed how much residents in general loved to see and make a fuss of dogs in the home when they were brought by relatives and friends.

We are now planning a pets day in which staff and family members will be encouraged to bring in their dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs or other animals.
